- Ingredients:
For the Apple Filling:
6-8 medium-sized apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter
For the Crumble Topping:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup rolled oats
For the Custard:
2 cups milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3 large egg yolks
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Prepare the apple filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.
Make the crumble topping: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, and cold butter. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the rolled oats.
Assemble the crumble: Transfer the apple mixture to a 9Ă—9-inch baking dish and top with the crumble mixture.
Bake the crumble: Bake the crumble in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Make the custard: In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is hot but not boiling. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and vanilla extract. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolks, whisking constantly.
Serve: Serve the warm apple crumble with the custard poured over the top.
